Joseph KERSHAW Captain 1 was born 1730 in West Riding, Yorkshire, England and was christened in none. He died 28 Dec 1791 in Camden, Kershaw Co., South Carolina. Joseph married Sarah MATHIS on 1763.

Went to Camden around 1758 as the agent of Ancrum, Lance and Loocock and in a
few years acquired lands, a saw and grist mill, flour mills, an indigo works,
a tobacco warehouse, a brewery and a distillery. In 1772 he was appointed
sheriff of Camden District. He fought and was captured in the Revolution,
lost much of his property trying to finance the American cause and lost his
brother Eli on thier way to prison in Barbadoes. He has been declared the
founder of Camden and the county which contains it is named Kershaw Co.

obit from Camden Times dated Augst 8, 1829 "Died in this town on the 4th inst.  Col. John Kershaw a distinguished citizen of this district in the 64th year of his age.  He was educated in England whither he was sent by his father during the trouble of the Revolution.  John Kershaw has represented this district in Congress,

Israel Mathis, In 1769 he listed his home as the parish of Prince William in the province of South Carolina and his occupation as carpenter. This in a deed he obtained from Daniel Mathis as his heir and executor, for 300 acres on the Savannah River
Prince William Parish in Granville County.  In his will dated October 4, 1788 he appointed his uncle Joshua Teague, his cousin Elijah Teague and his cousin David Mason of Bush River and Indian Creek executors and asked that his children receive thei
share as they come of age. He also asked the executors to move his family and property to Bush River and in the event that his wife remarries, they may remove the children as the executors think proper.

Samuel MATHIS [Parents] 1 was born 22 Mar 1760. He died 26 Sep 1823. Samuel married Margaret Cathcart MILLER on 22 Jan 1793.

Fought in the Revolution and was captured at the fall of Charleston in 1780.
He was released in a prisoner trade and returned to Camden to manage his
brother-in-law's (Joseph Kershaw) plantation at Burndale. A small portion of
his diary of this period was preserved. He opened a store in Camden after the
war, but then in 1790 he began to practiced law and continued for 20 years
before he again went into the mercantile trade.
