The Derry News, Friday, September 2, 1932
DERRY YOUTH KILLED IN TRAGIC ACCIDENT

Falls From Freight Car Into Path of Train.

Body Dragged 150 Feet.

A second tragically fatal accident in two weeks caused Derry to be filled
with excitement on Thursday when the 11:15 South bound B & M gasoline train
struck and nearly instantly killed a popular young man of the town.  Robert
Wilbur Whitney, 22, who was unloading grain from a freight car on the side
track a hundred feet north of the Broadway crossing.
Witnesses say that in some way, Mr. Whitney lost his balance in the freight
car and fell through the car door into the path of the train.  The body was
badly mutilated and was dragged for a distance of over a hundred feet.  About
an hour's work was required to jack up the heavy engine and remove the body
from under the car.
Whitney's brother, Leon, for whom he was working, is the manger of the local
Hood Grain Co.
Besides the brother, the survivors include the parents, Mr and Mrs Wilbur
Whitney of RFD #2, Derry; and two sisters, Mrs Delia Harvey of Hampton Beach
and Mrs Doris Boyle of 4 Fordway, Derry.
The victim of the accident was an exceptionally popular young man of the town
and a fine physical specimen.  He was a graduate of Pinkerton Academy with the
class of '29 and has a host of friends among the recent graduates of that
institution.  His record at Pinkerton was admirable and his athletic record
particularly was a thing to be envied.
He was Pinkerton's backfield star on the gridiron the last two years of his
PA career and played at end his first two years.  He was Capt. in his Junior
year and was also Capt. of the Spring Track Team his Junior and Senior years.
He won a total of eight athletic major letters during his four years.
He was vice president of his class in his Freshman year and president of the
class his Junior and Senior years.
He played a leading part in "The Obstinate Family" one of a group of three
plays given by his class at the Academy Hall on March 30, 1928.
He also had an important role in "Lost, a Chaperon", presented by his Senior
Class on March 22, 1929 at Adams Memorial Hall.
A peculiarly fateful fact concerning the tragic accident was that Mr Whitney
was at home with his parents on a vacation and was merely assisting his brother
in the additional work of unloading the carload of grain.  He was employed at
the Kidder Peabody Company in Boston and resided at 48 Myrtle St., Melrose,
Mass.
The funeral services have been arranged for Sunday afternoon at two thirty
o'clock at the St Luke's M.E. Church, the pastor Rev. A. M. Shattuck,
officiating.
