Jack MAYHUE [Parents] 1 married Iva Ellen TALLEY.

"Came to Sand Springs, Oklahoma in the fall of 1920.  Jack operated a small grocery store located in one corner of a very nice hotel on the south end of Main Street.  They lived in the second story of a block house located nearby.  The race riot in Tulsa took place during this time.  Soon afterwards, Mr. and Mrs. Cart (owners of the store and hotel) built a grocery in the 700 block of Garfield, and Jack worked for them there.
Later, he rented a building at 4th and Roosevelt and went into the grocery business himself.  He and Iva built a small house in Hall's Garden Addition soon afterwards.  This was near the railroads where the "Katy" train came by everyday.  Later, they built another house in the same neighborhood on what is now Long Street, sold it and built another house on the NE corner of Long Street.  Jim and Marge grew up there, walking to and from school.
During the depression, Jack and Iva took care of many of their customers when they were unable to pay their accounts.  He and one of his suppliers who sold chickens and eggs helepd one another to stay in business by exchanging checks, hoping they would be able to cover them at the proper time, and they always did.  Marge used to bring her friends into the store for lunch, where Jack always made them lunch.
Around 1939-40, they bought two lots and houses at Fourth and Roosevelt and they built a new grocery store on the corner and a house between the store and exiting house.  Jim and his mother worked with Jack in the store and later, Jim took over the store and continued until his death."
