In 1892, the small town of Old Barta, now known as Prague, had been established as a Czech town, although the Sac and Fox Indian tribes still occupied much of the surrounding lands.

Their first home was a dug out, as were many of the early settler's homes.  Neighborhood centers were established where the essential staples of groceries and merchandise could be purchased.  Marie could buy milk at 5 cents a quart, butter at 10 cents a pound and eggs at 5 cents a dozen.  The nearest large towns were Oklahoma City which took 4 days to reach, and Shawnee which was 1/2 day away.  There, Josef would purchase the material items he and Marie needed to set up their farm.  The nearest post office was 24 miels away.

Josef soon replaced the dugout home with a sod house.  The land was prairies with few trees and most of the people living there were poor.  The soon had a sod chicken house.

Received letter in October.  Didn't respond.
Mentions that his hand is better.

Letter A:  From Jan Chyba
    To:  brother-in-law, sister and children..
Mentions it was not very good at their place but at least they didn't need to be in bed as Mrs. Sobotkova.  They can at least walk.
Mentions his hand might be overworked from his work.  It took 6 years before his hand was ok, and when he was healthy again, it worked.  Explains that after the improvements (on the farm) the landlord gave him a smaller part of the field for potatoes and Jan became so angry and felt such grief, that the pain returned.  He said a couple of words to the landlord and the landlord became angry and started a feud against Jan at the courts.  The landlord didn't win but Jan became so angry that a great pain came, started on the right hand side of  his breast and spread to the right hand.  He hopes to become healthy again.
Mentions that Marie Penaz had written that they had attended a WEdding.
Mentions that Gustov from Sprihovna had a wedding and Jan was invited, but unable to attend because he was ill.

After Christmas, there was a bigger slaughter of pigs.   Says his pigs aren't as big as the American Penaz's pigs.   Jan fed the pigs over 6 months and at the end of that time, their weigh was 32 kg..  Not too concerned, they were about to consume it.   They hired a butcher to do the slaughter.
Mentions a letter from his sister, (receiver of this letter) and the gift enclosed for their mother.  Gift and letter received March 4th.
Advice for American horses:  States that Marie and Joseph's horses are too slim and they need to listen to his advice:  When you comb/brush the horses so that the first dust, dirt is taken away and the secon dust, toast dirt and add into the food for the horses.  They willbe better but to the female horse, don't give it if she is pregant.

Letter E.
    From Jan Chyba
Received letter and gifts.   Jan received the kerchief with butterflies and mother the black thing and Mary Sobotkovov, the red thing.
Surprised that they weren't lost in the journey across the ocean.
Glad to hear that Marie and Joseph received the $2.00 that Marie thought Anna had sent, but had been sent by mother.   Mother wanted to repay something that Anna owed.
The sickness is at Sobotku and at Jan's place.  Jan had paid a lot of money but was not better.
Weather was cold with strong winds.
Attended a fair at the monestary and it was very nice.  The weather was fair and there were a lot of people.  Such croweds there that it wasn't possible to walk.  Josefkaa (a woman, Josef) and Tonik (little Toni) was in the fair - in the wake.  Wanted Toni to write a few words, but he wouldn't.
Children were also sick - all 3 children were ill, but are now better.  They have only a little piece of a field and not enough money.  They make very little money and don't know what to do - farming or craft. Now it is summer and they cannot sew too much (to make dresses).  Household not too cheerful.
Marie Sobotkova was jumping for joy that she will have a new dress.
Thanks Pepi and Marjunce (Little Joe and Marie) for the kerchief.
     Greetings from Sprilrona
    Greetings from Ekstajnobi
    Greetings from Krepelkovi
**On the envelope enclosed with the letter is written:  "Marie Penaz, Born and Christened on the Easter Sunday and then the year 1899."
***This letter could be from Kathy Chyba.  It was not signed but sounds much more feminine, especially regarding the kerchief.

Letter D.
    From Jan
Received letter of October 31st and not happy that Americans were experiencing the drout.
Jan and family were experiencing a good year, rich and productive and pleasant.   Idt would be better if it were possible to sow earlier in the spring, but it was still better than in America.
Received letter of December 8th on December 23rd, right before holidays (right before Christmas).
Jan says that Mother is so-so but her hand is bad.
He says that he has similar problems when he works hard or during cold weather.  The doctor said that he should leet the hand electofry (physical therapy?)  He is hesitant becauses he doesn't know whether it will work or not, but he is very ill - his breast on the right side.  It causes him anger, grief and has spread into his back in the shoulder blade and his neck is swelling first on the right hand side then on the left hand side.   The swelling on the neck has now diminished after pills from the doctor but on his veins on the neck, he has small bumps and they will not go away.  It jams his neck.  When he swallows something thicker than only bread, he cannot swallow it.  It lasted almost an entire year, but when he went to  the doctor the first time, he  told him that he must have some enemies in his house.  It hit him right away.  He knew immediately that they can do something to him when the foresters moved to his place.  The second year, (he threw away the prescription from the doctor and now he thinks that the same doctor is not giving the same pills which helped before and so he is not improving).  He says that about a year and a half ago, his medical insurance became effective and he pays 32 kr.  a month for doctor and medicine and that covers all, but is irritated that he pays so much money and he is not healthy.
He says that Mrs. Sobotkovov cannot walk, but at least he can.
Mentions that he sent them a letter in either October or September - not sure exactly when.

Letter C.  From Jan and K. Chyba
Mentions Jan's health is not too good.  His right hand is in pain so that he cannot work for long periods of time.  He says that he suffered for about 7-1/2 years.  He says there is pain in his elbow.  In his job, its very bad...he can work but slowly or take it easy for sometimes it was a little bit better and he didn't feel any pain in his elbow but it has now returned.
Mentions they are not angry because Marie does not write anything to make them sad.
They received her letter in the Spring - Aapril 13th and now another in August 26th.  Marie wrote that they had a bad crop that year.
Mentions they are having great drought there and in September, too much rain.  They had 3 mundles of yarka and 2 mundles of oat.   (like shock or sheaves - a shock is 15 sheeaves of grain )  The crop was from the fields which he rented.   It was fine dry, but when he transported it to home such a rain came that everything was completely wet.  It was the last time he rented the field because the owner, Malkobka sold the field .
     The Sobotkus send their greetings
    Greetings from Pikuloei
    Volavka send greetings
    Greetings from Sbootka
Greetings from Posada the cabinet maker and his family.

     Dear Sister:  I
It is a little cold here, we had several showers of rain the past number of days.  I personally am feeling good.  There is not much news over here.  I went to church this morning.

Mary, I am working at the laundry now, started a week ago Friday.  It will please me if you will send to me fifty-cents.  Please arrange to send the follow colothing:  over-coat, neck-tie, pair gloves.  You see I own only the clothes I brought or better had on last summer.  Please try and have my coat to my old Sunday suit brought or mailed to me.
Dr. Boyburn told me that if you come over here they might turn me loose.  Mary I feel real good and am able to work every day.  You have been writing that you will come as soon as you can; but I don't see you hardly.  I certainly would like to get out before Christmas.
                        Lovingly Brother,
                         Joe Penaz
